Forest School
It is essential that all children get frequent and regular opportunities to explore, be curious about and learn in the outdoor environment. Learning outside the classroom supports the development of healthy and active lifestyles by offering children opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement whilst promoting a sense of well-being.
At Lydeard St Lawrence School we believe that Forest school is an all-season activity. Forest School sessions focus on a wide range of skills such as; communication, self and in the moment risk assessment, team working, emotional resilience and intelligence as well as self motivation and empathy. In addition to this, curriculum based learning is delivered through physical outdoor based activity. For example, the children may be exploring our school site making sound and site maps, taking surveys of and observing the flora and fauna, using keys and guides to identify what they have found or using natural materials to build, design and construct. Bush-craft, outdoor art, science, DT, English and Maths are all woven into these sessions as appropriate .
Forest School is weekly provision for Reception and KS1 children. KS2 access Forest School as part of their values sessions to develop new skills. Our Forest School is led by Becky who is a Level 3 qualified Forest School leader.
Our Forest School provision is provided by Primary Forest School and Outdoor Education. They also provide a weekly after school club where children can develop on their knowledge and skills learnt during their weekly Forest School sessions.
